What the torque converter does

The torque converter is the fluid coupling between the engine and the automatic transmission. It multiplies torque to get you moving and, once up to speed, its lock-up clutch connects the engine more directly for efficiency. Because it works constantly and under load, it is a common source of trouble when things start to feel wrong.

Signs of a torque converter fault

• Shudder. A vibration or juddering, often felt at a steady cruise, is a classic lock-up clutch symptom.
• Slipping. The engine revs climb without matching acceleration, as if the drive is not fully connecting.
• Stalling or shuddering at a stop. A converter or lock-up fault can pull the engine down as you come to rest.
• Overheating and contamination. A failing converter can shed material into the fluid, which then circulates through the whole transmission.

Some of these overlap with valve body and solenoid faults, which is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters - the symptom alone does not tell you which part is at fault.

Repair or replace

Once we have confirmed the converter is the problem, we will repair or replace it as the fault requires, and check the fluid and cooler for any debris the failure may have sent through the system. Left unattended, converter contamination is one of the fastest ways to turn a contained fault into a full rebuild, so it is worth acting on early.
