Automatic transmission FAQ
Straight answers to the questions we are asked most about automatic transmission problems, servicing and repairs. If yours is not here, call us on 03 379 3692 - advice is free.
How do I know if my automatic transmission has a problem?
Common warning signs include slipping gears, delayed engagement, shuddering, harsh shifting, a transmission warning light, fluid leaks, loss of drive and unusual noises. If you notice any of these, an early diagnosis can often prevent more costly damage.
Do I need a full rebuild, or can it be repaired?
Often it can be repaired. Many faults are a specific component, such as a solenoid, valve body or torque converter, that can be fixed for far less than a full overhaul. We diagnose the actual cause first, then give you honest advice on whether a repair or a complete rebuild is the better decision.
Can you install a used transmission instead of rebuilding mine?
Yes. Supplying and installing used transmissions is a genuine part of what we do, and on some vehicles it is the better call. Where a sound used unit is available for your make and model it usually costs less than a full rebuild and can get you back on the road sooner. We look at the cost comparison and the benefits of each option, and explain what is covered either way, so you can make an informed choice.
How much does a transmission repair cost?
It depends entirely on the fault, so we never quote blind. We diagnose the problem first, explain what we find, and give you a clear quote before any work begins. Nothing is started without your approval.
How often should an automatic transmission be serviced?
As a general guide, every 50,000km suits most vehicles, using the correct fluid for your make and model. Towing, heavy loads and stop-start city driving all shorten that interval. Regular servicing is the best way to extend transmission life and prevent expensive repairs.
What types of vehicles and transmissions do you work on?
Automatic transmissions are all we do. We work on conventional automatics, CVTs, dual-clutch (DCT) and hybrids across passenger cars, SUVs, 4WDs, light commercials, European, Japanese, American, classic and performance vehicles.
Do you diagnose electronic transmission faults?
Yes. Modern automatics are electronically controlled, and we use advanced diagnostic equipment to read stored and live fault data from the transmission control module, alongside a road test, to pinpoint mechanical and electronic faults accurately.
Is your work guaranteed?
Yes. Our workmanship is warranty-backed, and we use quality parts and proven repair methods. We are also happy to talk through exactly what is covered before you commit to any work.
Where are you located and what areas do you serve?
We are based at 133 Antigua Street, Addington, Christchurch, and we help motorists, workshops and fleets across Christchurch, Canterbury and the wider South Island. See our contact page for directions and hours.
